Choosing a Reading or Poem for a Funeral or Celebration of Life

by Steve Pritchard-Jones

It doesn’t have to be solemn – it just has to feel right

Choosing a reading or poem for a funeral or celebration of life can feel like a daunting task. In the middle of organising the service, supporting family, and navigating your own emotions, selecting the right words can seem like one more overwhelming decision.

But here’s the truth: there is no “right” or “wrong” reading. What matters is that it feels true to the person you are honouring.

It doesn’t all have to be serious

Funerals are moments of reflection, but they can also be moments of warmth, humour, and celebration. Not every reading has to be solemn or traditional. Some families choose something uplifting, quirky, or even downright funny – especially if their loved one enjoyed a good laugh.

There are countless options, including:

  • Traditional poems such as Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep.
  • Light-hearted verses that bring a smile through the tears.
  • Modern pieces about life, love, family, or nature.
  • Song lyrics or film quotes that meant something special.
  • Personal writings, such as letters, posts, anecdotes, or memories.

The beauty of a reading is that it captures the spirit of a person – and that spirit might be tender, mischievous, brave, caring, or wonderfully eccentric.

Where to find inspiration

If you’re not sure where to begin, you’re not alone. Many families feel the same. You’ll find a range of examples on my blog at www.pjtopnote.co.uk, and most funeral directors also keep collections of popular readings you can browse through.

Sometimes, reading a few options aloud helps you feel which one “fits.” Other times, a family member will instantly recognise the perfect piece because it sounds just like the person they’ve lost.

Creating a unique, personal moment

A well-chosen reading can:

  • set the tone for the service
  • capture a personality in just a few lines
  • give comfort to those listening
  • add a moment of lightness or reflection
  • help tell your loved one’s story

If several people are speaking, readings can also help balance the service – perhaps one serious piece and one lighter one, or a poem paired with a favourite memory.

Need help choosing? I’m here for you

Many families like a little guidance, especially if they want something meaningful but aren’t sure where to start. Whether you’re planning a traditional funeral, a celebration of life, or something more informal, I’m always happy to help you find – or write – a reading that feels exactly right.
