Writing a Eulogy? Start With These 4 Simple Stages 🤍
by Steve Pritchard-Jones

Being asked to write a eulogy is an honour — but it can also feel overwhelming.
If you’re staring at a blank page wondering where to begin… take a breath.
It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It doesn’t need to be poetic.
It just needs to be sincere.
Here’s a simple 4-stage structure that can make writing a eulogy feel more manageable.
Start With Their Early Life
Set the scene.
Where were they born?
Who were their family?
Was there a small detail from childhood that shaped them?
You don’t need a full biography — just enough to gently introduce them to the room.
Talk About What They Loved 💛
This is where they start to feel present.
Did they love:
⚽ Football?
🌿 Gardening?
🌊 Seaside holidays?
🍳 Cooking for family?
🎶 Singing in the car?
These details bring warmth — and often a few smiles.
Share What They Were Known For ✨
Were they:
😂 The joker?
🛠 The fixer?
⏰ Always five minutes late?
🤍 The steady one everyone relied on?
This is often the heart of the eulogy — where people nod in recognition.
End With a Message 🕊
What will you miss most?
What did they teach you?
What would you like everyone to carry with them?
Keep it simple. Keep it real.
A eulogy isn’t about listing achievements.
It’s about capturing the essence of a person.
If it sounds like them — and it sounds like you — you’ve done it right.
Save this for when you need it, or share it with someone who might. 🤍
